Health Benefits of Green Tea

By Michael Russell Historical evidence suggests that tea leaves boiled in water were consumed as far back as 5,000 years ago in India and China. These two countries were the earliest users of tea. Tea also plays a very important part in social rituals of Japan. In Asian countries tea has long played an important cultural role. Tea is derived from leaves of a plant called Camellia sinensis. The plant is grown in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. There are three types of tea - Green, black and oolong. All of these are derived from Camellia sinensis, the difference lying in the way the leaves are processed. Green tea is prepared from leaves that are not fermented; oolong tea is prepared from partially fermented leaves, while black tea leaves are fully fermented. Green and oolong tea are mostly consumed in Asian countries like China, Japan, India and Thailand, while black tea is preferred in United States. In recent periods green tea has attracted a lost of attention due to many health benefits attributed to it. Many studies have been conducted which explore the link between consumption of green tea and incidence of certain diseases in the population. It has been observed that green tea is helpful in: - preventing cancer, - improving the ratio of ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol to ‘bad’ cholesterol, - cognition, - treating flatulence, - regulating blood sugar, - regulating body temperature, - improving digestion. In some studies it was suggested that the lower incidence of heart related diseases in the French population in spite of the consumption of a fat rich diet is related to the drinking of large quantities of green tea by them. This may be compared to the lower incidence of heart diseases in Japanese population, 75% of which are heavy smokers. The medicinal properties of green tea are attributed to the presence of polyphenols, which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent the damage caused by free radicals present in body. Free radicals occur naturally, but they grow in numbers due to some environmental conditions like pollution, ultra-violet light, cigarette smoke etc. Green tea contains 30% to 40% polyphenols, while black tea contains up to 10% polyphenols. 3 to 4 cups of green tea is recommended for an adult. Green tea has been found to be beneficial in following conditions : (1) People who drink green tea are found to have lower LDL cholesterol levels and higher HDL cholesterol levels. One study conducted in animals suggests that polyphenols may help inhibit the absorption of cholesterol by intestines thus helping in the excretion of cholesterol from body. (2) Though it has not yet been conclusively proved that drinking of green tea is related to the lower incidence of caner in Japan, yet some studies conducted in animals indicate that polyphenols that act as antioxidants may be responsible for killing the cancer cells. (3) It was found in certain studies that polyphenols help control Type 1 diabetes. The body stops producing insulin in Type 1 diabetes. Green tea can be helpful in regulating levels of glucose in the blood in such cases. (4) Green tea has also been found to be beneficial for the liver. It helps control the damaging effect of alcohol on it. People who drink green tea are found to have lower incidence of liver diseases. (5) Green tea may also be helpful in reducing weight in obese people. Though not conclusively proved, weight reducing properties of polyphenols have been noted in some studies. In some cases, however, certain precautions need to be taken while taking green tea. People with stomach ulcers, heart problems, hyperthyroidism and psychological disorders should not take green tea. Pregnant women should also avoid it. Green tea should also be avoided if one is taking any of the following medications: anti-biotics, Benzodiazepines, Beta blockers, blood thinning medicines, chemotherapy, oral contraceptives and lithium. 4 Fat Loss Myths - Are You Exercising On Bad Information?

By Z.D. Zimmerman The exercise business attracts a lot of shady people, and it’s not just the late night infomercial people. It’s also the people who write fitness and diet books. Every couple of months another new exercise book comes out with the same old myths. This article will expose 4 common fat loss myths and why they are myths. Myth #1 Do a cardio workout in the early morning before eating breakfast. Okay, it’s true that early morning is a good time to exercise. You have the most energy then and you give yourself energy for the rest of the day. But there’s nothing special about 5:00 AM, especially in the winter. Your body burns calories and fat just as well at 9:00 PM. If you oversleep and miss your morning workout, don’t think, well, I missed the most optimum time to exercise. In reality, it doesn’t matter when you exercise, as long as you exercise with intensity. Myth #2 Make sure you’re in your fat burning zone when you do cardio. Fat burning zone equals low intensity. You’ll burn more calories from fat, but less calories overall if you stay in your fat burning zone. Also, fat burning zone training doesn’t cause your body to burn calories after exercising. But with interval training, for example, you burn calories for hours after training, which leads to greater fat loss. Myth #3 Fat burning kicks in only after 20 minutes of cardio. Come on people, there’s no “fat burning” on / off switch in your body. What if you do 19 minutes and 46 seconds on a stationary bike…no fat burned? Enough said. How much fat you burn during a workout is just not that important. What’s your metabolism doing the other 23 hours of the day? Is it still burning fat? Myth #4 You’ll lose weight by eating negative calorie foods. A negative calorie requires more energy to eat it than it provides you. Spinach is a negative calorie food. If you ate nothing but spinach, I guess you would starve to death. But wait…Popeye only eats spinach. And he isn’t dead; I just watched him this morning. Actually, there’s no such thing as a negative calorie food, it’s some diet guru’s catchphrase. Popeye should kick his butt. Have you been buying into any of these myths? Hope not. When it comes to exercise, let common sense guide you. As mentioned above, one the most important things is exercising intensely. This causes “turbulence” in your muscles. With Turbulence Training, you keep your metabolism elevated 24 hours a day. Z. D. Zimmerman is a private personal trainer in the Denver, Colorado area. He is always testing new ways of exercising. When designing a program for a client, Turbulence Training is one of the few resources he refers to regularly. For more information, see his excellent Turbulence Training Review. What You Should Know About Mixing Medications and Diet…

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=D._S._Epperson] D. S. Epperson I had a call the other day from a potential client in a serious situation. He was young and had been diagnosed with CAD (Coronary Artery Disease), suffering from extremely high blood pressure and cholesterol, his doctor had put him on a medication that was suppose to lower and control these symptoms, and he had been on this medication for over 2 years. During this time, this 24 year old man had developed a blockage in his hand that had become inflamed and eventually ruptured, causing the possibility of amputation. The situation was brought under control using anti-inflammatory means, but he remained on his cholesterol medication without adjustment even after this incident. About 6 months later, this young man was suffering from another blockage, but this time, it was in a critical area that couldn’t be treated without specialization and the local doctors did not have the experience to treat him. These doctors told him that there was no one in the 4 state area that could serve him, he was desperate and afraid, and turned to me for help. When he first called, I asked him some questions to help me understand his situation. How old are you? (25) Do you suffer from High blood pressure or high cholesterol? (yes) Does your family have a history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes or insulin resistance? (yes) Does you family have a history of bowel problems, colon cancer or colon polyps? (yes, my twin brother) What is your Ethnic Origin? (English) Are you physically active? (yes, when I can be) Has your doctor put you on any medication (yes, and he named it) At the time that you were put on this medication, did your doctor recommend a glycemic, low fat, low sodium diet? (no) What kinds of foods have you been eating while on this medication? (regular foods, meat, vegetables, potatoes, you know, stuff in restaurants and stuff that is easy to fix at home) With the condition that you currently have, do you suffer from loss of vision or blurred vision? (yes) Are you suffering from Migraine headaches? (yes, constantly) Are you suffering from the loss of motor skills, have difficulty walking, chewing, swallowing, lifting? (yes) Are these symptoms constant, or do they come and go? (Constant) Is this blockage behind your right eye? (yes) What has your doctor recommended? (they have recommended that I be treated elsewhere, because they do not have a specialist here) Have they recommended a place you should go or a specialist that you should see? (no, they can’t even tell me what kind of doctor I should get) My recommendations were for him to seek help immediately, within the next week. I suggested that his doctors give him a letter of recommendation to see a Cerebral Neuro-Vascular Surgeon. He and his friends got on the Internet and found some specialists that could fit him in in the next few days. My fear was that the situation had gone on to long, and that he was in imminent danger. I told him that when he returned from his surgery, that he should call to make an appointment with me so that we could get his blood pressure and cholesterol under control, so this would not happen again. He asked me why this had happened in the first place, he had taken his medications like they had been prescribed. I explained that when medications are used in the body, they have to not only act, but they are also acted upon. When you use medications designed to reduce something in the body, you shouldn’t add things that would cause the medications to have to compete or work harder to accomplish the goal. A cholesterol medication to control the fat in your blood, and then eat fat, or things that create fat. A diabetic medication to control blood sugar, and then eat sugar or carbs that convert to sugars. A medication used for the treatment of gout, then eat things that are high in acid or create acid. These kinds of things can make the medications ineffective, and a waste of time and money. He said that he had been on this medication for two years, and that the cholesterol numbers had never been affected by the medication. I told him that there is a way to lower his cholesterol effectively, using a restrictive diet, exercise, and a few supplements along with his prescription, and that as soon as he returned with relative health, we would start him on his program. For most people, when they become ill, they go to their doctors in search of a quick fix, a pill or a shot that will make things better instantly, that doesn’t require any effort or discomfort on their part. The sad truth of the matter is that possession requires responsibility, and responsibility requires action. D.S. Internet RV Financing vs. Dealer Financing

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Barry_Wilder]Barry Wilder RV Dealer Financing You WILL Pay More! Youve just signed a purchase agreement with your local (or not-so-local) RV dealer. You know the drill your next stop, will be the finance office. (aka: F&I) Your salesman does the hand-off, and suddenly you are faced with a decision that seems simple, but can cost you many times the profit made on the front end of your transaction; the back end, or Finance and Insurance office. As I always try to convey to my clients: The dealer is NOT the enemy. In fact, he can be your best friend when your RV is in need of service or repair. He has laid out literally MILLIONS of dollars to allow you the opportunity to browse a good selection of units. He has paid his dues, and continues to pay them on a daily basis. Keep his and your, best interests at heart when deciding on your source of financing. There is one hard and fast rule that applies to RV Dealer provided financing. He must pack (inflate) the buy rate (interest rate) on the financing he provides to his customers to earn a profit on the transaction. Once again, he uses this profit to pay overhead, commissions, etc. 1. Should you consider the benefits of financing through your RV dealer? Yes. 2. Are you stuck with the financing and interest rate he quotes? NO. 3. Should you consider alternative sources of financing? Definitely! Internet RV Financing You WILL Save Money! Most RV buyers are so frazzled by the time the finish the negotiation to finalize the purchase of a new RV that they fold under the pressure of the F&I office. This can be a costly mistake. Shopping for your best interest rate and terms can be just as important as shopping for the right RV, and negotiating your best price. In fact, you stand to save literally THOUSANDS of dollars by simply lowering your interest rate by a quarter or half of a percent. Internet based RV finance companies normally use many of the same lenders that RV dealers use. Its simply a matter of overhead and the cost of doing business. Since the Internet based companies generally have lower operating costs; they are able to pass the savings on to you. Most Internet RV finance sources have online rate quote forms and loan applications which can be completed in a matter of minutes. Normally, credit approval can be obtained the same day you apply. When you submit your online application, you should also be prepared to send some additional documentation, which is necessary for your approval. Required Loan Approval Documents If you are EMPLOYED (work for someone else), you will normally be required to fax or email proof of income. This is usually a recent pay stub and your last 2 years W-2 forms. (For each applicant) If you are SELF-EMPLOYED, you will normally be required to send your last 2 years tax returns and any attached schedules. If you are RETIRED, you will need to provide documentation of social security benefits, pensions, dividends or other sources of income. Once your loan is approved, your loan processor should help you in obtaining additional documentation, such as: 1. A copy of your purchase agreement with the seller. 2. A copy of the title. (copy of the MSO on new units). 3. Proof of insurance listing the new lien holder as loss payee. 4. Copies of all the applicant(s) drivers licenses. Most Internet based RV loans take from 4 to 6 business days to complete. Information must be collected, and documents must be sent by overnight mail for signatures, and then sent overnight mail back to the lender or broker. When arranging the purchase an RV, you should allow a week or more for your scheduled delivery date. This should allow plenty of time for rate shopping, loan approval and closing. When your closing is completed, funds can be sent to the seller by overnight mail, or simply wire transferred. Which Type of Financing is Best? You want an easy answer to the question posed in this article? OK, Ill cut to the chase It depends on what youre looking for. 1. You want EASY? Let the dealer handle it. 2. You want the BEST RATE? Do a little work. Sure you may have to do a little more work, but if you break down your long-term savings into the actual time you have spent researching and completing your RV loan You could be making a VERY short-lived hourly PAY RATE roughly equivalent to that of Bill Gates. Online Payday Loans Convenience On The Internet

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Connie_Barker]Connie Barker Go shopping for the kids, go grocery shopping, pick up the dog at the vet, and on and on it goes, our lives have become a whirlwind of craziness in recent decades. Most folks barely have time to think let alone stop and take the time to find and then apply for an emergency loan. Well times are changing and now they can find the time because an online payday loan is as close as your computer. Online payday loans began popping up on the internet in the early 1990s. They were scarce at first with just a few online lenders wanting to step out there and take a chance but they could be found. Back then, however, lenders were still asking for paperwork that had to accompany the loan to be filled out and faxed or mailed in. Needless to say the days of having to send in paperwork are in the past and now everything to obtain a payday loan online can be done, well, online. Payday loans that are obtained online are a whole new breed of loans. These loans are loans that are made quickly and easily but have to be repaid on the next payday of the borrower. Some times, depending on the size of the loan, this will be stretched out over two consecutive paydays. Either way to apply for an online payday loan an individual researches and finds a payday loan website that they feel good about. When youve found an online payday lender that works best for them the borrower clicks on the application area of the site. The borrower can now fill out the application sitting at the kitchen table in their own home. The requirements for most online payday loans are that the borrower has an active checking account and direct deposit. Direct deposit is when your employer deposits your paychecks directly into your bank account. People are using this method of getting paid more and more these days because it is convenient and safe. Once your application has been approved the lender deposits the fund into your account directly and the money is available for you to use. On your next payday the lender will take the funds out of your account plus a small fee as was agreed upon at the time of the loan application. So if you find that you need a little extra cash, consider a online payday loan. Its fast and its easy. Looking For Love? Stop Looking, And Increase Your Chances Of Finding It

By Karin J. MacKenzie One day, I was hiking with a group I’d found by picking up a brochure at a local bookstore. I couldn’t help but hear an older gentleman complaining to a woman walking beside him. Well, where else are you supposed to meet people? he said with an air of defeat. I dont like the bars. Ive tried the dating clubs. He might as well have said to her, Look, Im only on the hike today to meet a woman, and Im striking up a conversation with you to see if you might be her. Im very unhappy on my own right now. And no matter where I go or where I look, I strike out. Im frustrated. Are you her? Well, would you want to date a man like that? I wouldnt. Id be afraid hed be expecting me to hand him HIS life and HIS happiness on a silver platter. How much more attractive and vital he would have been if hed been on the hike to enjoy the exercise, fresh air, and nature with an upbeat attitude. Then, hed be spending his time doing something he really enjoyed and VERY LIKELY hed make new friends who enjoy the same activities. But with his whiny attitude, I wasnt surprised to hear he was having trouble meeting people. I always set out to enjoy the activity, dont worry about meeting someone, and come home feeling Ive enjoyed myself. And I meet lots of people. It doesnt matter if they are a romantic prospect or not. Imagine, if I went on a hike LOOKING FOR A ROMANTIC PARTNER. Most times, Id be coming home disappointed and discouraged, instead of recharged from the exercise, and Id soon start to feel and sound like our dejected gentleman hiker. Its so unattractive. Your goal must be happiness, not a partner. Concentrate on expanding your social network, not finding the one. Cultivate friendships of both sexes, of all ages, wherever you go. People know people. The more people you know, the more people youll meet through them, and the more fulfilling and fun your life will become. And you MUST enjoy your life. The moment you do, youll PROJECT yourself as someone whos enjoying her life, and that is very, very, attractive. The social and dating invitations naturally follow. Vital, attractive, happy, confident, dateable, single people are not standing on every street corner. Become one of them, and like-minded people will naturally want to seek you out. Do NOT go out there in the world looking for the one. Ever. Have you ever heard you find love when youre not looking? It made no sense to me, for the longest time. I thought people were trying to suggest Id stumble on romance as soon as I managed to stop wanting one. And since romance is so lovely, almost everyone wants one! But heres the deal: When youre looking for love, youre looking desperate. Its as simple as that. I absolutely disagree 100 per cent with the notion that one should tell everyone they know theyre looking for a romantic partner, as if that would increase ones chances. In fact, it will have the opposite effect. I would have no desire to date a man broadcasting to the universe he was looking for a relationship. How could I be sure he wanted ME, and not just a warm body doubling as a security blanket? But if youre out there looking for fun, friendships, adventure and new experiences, you get very, very happy with the process. You enjoy the journey, and stop worrying about the destination. Youre confident. You glow. And you begin to ATTRACT things TO yourself. Part of what youll attract is romantic interest. Trust me. Its like magic. People want to be around happy, confident, glowing people. So dont forget the Golden Rule. Unless youre practising the worlds oldest profession, dont ever step outside your front door LOOKING for love. Go out there looking to spread some joy, meet new people and enjoy your life. Karin J. Do You Want To Look Ten Years Younger?

By T. O’ Donnell Do you want to look ten years younger? Here are twelve beauty tips that are guaranteed to work, if you follow them *all*. There’s no point eating fresh fruit and vegetables, and then smoking like a chimney! 1. Moisturise. This is a misnomer, you can’t actually put water in your skin. You can, however, oil it up (like leather!), and trap water next to the skin. After every wash, put an inert oil on your face. Johnson’s Baby Oil is good. Put it especially on your laughter-lines (around the eyes), your forehead, around the mouth and on the neck. You don’t need expensive ointments; independent studies show these are a con. 2. Eat Good Food. Eat plenty of fruit, fish and vegetables, drink water. A healthy diet makes for a healthy body, and health makes you look younger. 3. Sleep. MOST IMPORTANT. At least eight hours. A good night’s kip will make you look years younger. Go to bed before midnight, as early as possible. You’ve had enough when you bound out of bed in the morning, full of energy. If you don’t, you need more, or you’re depressed, or you went to bed after midnight. Lack of sleep is very ageing. If you don’t get enough sleep you look haggard i.e. old. Sleep deprivation is akin to being a zombie; your IQ is less, memory poorer, and your reactions slower. You become more prone to disease. 4. Don’t Smoke. Smoking constricts the capillaries in your face. This is why smokers look pale. It ages the skin. It makes your hair lank. A smoker is essentially in a constant state of ill-health; weaker immune system, less energy, less stamina. In time smoking can lead to serious disease. It lenghtens recovery time from other diseases. Doctors tend to write-off smokers; they know their work is being wasted. Cigarettes contain poisons like formaldehyde, ammonia, arsenic, and benzene. The reason people crave them is because they also contain nictotine, which is more addictive than heroin. You can kick heroin in five days; nicotine can take weeks. 5. Don’t Drink Alcohol. Again, alcohol is a poison. Drunkenness is a mild form of poisoning; hence its alternative name: intoxication. I once knew some Australian girls when I first came to in London. They used to ‘party hearty’. One of them was very pretty. After 6 months she looked like she’d aged fifteen years; 20 going on 35. When I was very young I used to wonder why adults looked so old, tired and fed up. Certainly life has its disappointments, but we help death mark our card early on. 6. Don’t Sunbathe. In neolithic times men used to cure animal hides by exposing them to the sun. This was the earliest form of tanning; they were making leather. This is what’s happening to sunbather’s skin. That’s why 35 year-old sunbathers look 45, and 45 year-old sunbathers have skin the texture of a leather armchair. Sitting in the sun for hours is weak-minded. Look at the great beauties, the older ones. They kept well out of the sun; their skin is milky white. You don’t see their sisters in magazines, who, for a season’s healthy glow, sacrificed their looks forever. 7. Don’t Dye Or Bleach Your Hair. Unless your hair is grey or mousey, leave off putting chemicals on it. If you are healthy, your hair will reflect this. Bleaching is bad for your hair, and you may damage the follicles. If the dye doesn’t suit your skin tone, it won’t make you look good anyway. 8. Don’t Wear Formal Clothes. Dress younger, look younger! 9. Don’t Wear A Beard Or Moustache, Or Long Hair (for men). If your hair is thinning and long, or you have a beard or moustache, you’ll look older by ten years. Conversely, a short hair-cut and a clean-shaven face takes years off you. Cut off your sideburns; voila! instant youth. 10. Don’t Have Cosmetic Surgery. This is a trap. Because a man has M.D. after his name doesn’t mean he has the skill of a Michelangelo or Da Vinci. That’s what you need to remodel a human face. Why? Because our perceptions of human beauty rely on very subtle clues in another’s face; small lines, dimples, contours, expressions. A cosmetic surgeon cuts these out, and you are left with a mask. You lose some of your personality. You become a type; a Hollywood social x-ray, a waxen-faced thing. Don’t do it, girls! We are not machines; cut us, take a part out, replace it, and we are never quite the same again. 11. Don’t Over-diet, Over-exercise. This makes you look scrawny and haggard. A slightly fleshy face looks younger; the wrinkles fill out a bit. A bit of exercise gets the blood flowing, and reminds your muscles they exist. Too much intense exercise (more than two hours a day), a low carbohydrate diet, and you look haggard; worn out, old, under par. 12. Don’t Worry! If you have problems, resolve to deal with them, or deliberately avoid them; but decide, and then put them out of your mind. Stress and worry make you haggard, and pre-dispose you to disease. They keep you awake at night, and ruin the quality of your sleep. Meditate. Resolve your problems before you go to sleep at night. Observe your thoughts and emotions dispassionately. You may be surprised to find how crazy most are! In short, youth is a combination of factors; one cream or regime won’t do. Address your entire person, body and mind. Here’s to your good health! T. New York Flower Market

By Kent Pinkerton New York flower markets have a large selection of flowers that come in daily. The most popular and best thing you would see in the New York flower market is the selection of many rare species of flowers and plants. There is a wide variety of flowers of your choice in the New York flower market. Many different flower markets are available in the city of New York. Among those markets, Chelsea Flower Market is one of the largest not only in the wholesale category, but also in the retail florists section in New York City. It is located in Chelsea Market. An interesting fact is that the New York flower market has decreased considerably from the 1930s, when New Yorkers bought flowers for holidays like Easter. By the 1930s, millions of flowers were being sold around Sixth Avenue and Twenty-Eighth Street, including 500,000 Easter Lilies from Bermuda and 30,000 Tulips from Holland. As a major event, the third annual lunar New Year flower market starts with flowers, arts, performances, colors, fragrances and cultures. New York flower markets have various types of flower selections. They carry the green and flowering plants along with a large selection of supplies. These major flower markets provide special arrangements decorated for any events like weddings, private parties, and corporate events. They are arranged by the experienced staff provided by the flower market. Open air flower markets provide you the different selections of flowers and floral arrangements at discounts. They offer you a great selection of special floral arrangements, like a dozen roses in a box and a vase; large arrangements; baby boy arrangement; fall and garden arrangements; and the high style arrangement. The floor of the flower store is covered with an incredible range of foliage, from tiny cacti to towering ficus trees. New Year flower markets have large selections of potted plants. One should step into the New York flower markets often to see the new selections. Party Decorations are Easy

By Gail Leino We express ourselves in many ways and decorations for parties or holidays are one of the most common forms of self expression. A modest home becomes a vine covered cottage with the right decorations while an austere mansion can be modernized and takes on the personality of its inhabitants with the addition of colorful decorations. Streamers, paper centerpieces, confetti and paper party goods can all be coordinated with other decorations. Themed parties can be elaborate with little cost when enough time and effort are applied. Simple cardboard or plywood panels can be painted to depict any locale and the purchased decorations can be matched to the mural’s scene. With this small effort a party is located in a wood, a foreign city or a distant planet. Only the imagination limits the theme. Painting a mural of a snow with pine trees can evoke just the right mood for a Christmas party. Caroling or crafting will be a natural when the decorations support this scene. Other possibilities can be very simple but just as effective. For those with less confident art skills the printer can be used to enlarge a photograph to several panels which make good templates. Many printers have a poster feature which will work great for this purpose. The large objects can be cut out and traced on the mural panels and then painted. The rest of the scene can be painted free hand with poster paints or acrylics, which dry quickly without odor. When the image is painted onto several narrow panels of thin plywood they can be hinged with simple hand tools and cabinet hardware. This mural would be great anywhere in the room but would be especially useful as a divider between various areas. The buffet table might be separated from the dance floor in the area normally called the basement. Even Gastric Bypass Patients Hit Weight Loss Plateaus

By Kaye Bailey Sometime, during the phase of rapid weight loss after gastric bypass surgery, many patients may find their weight loss is stalled. Talk about discouraging. The daily ritual of weighing and celebrating another pound gone has turned into depressing torture because the scale just wont move- the dreaded plateau has arrived. One reason for the plateau is physiological. The body reacting to the restrictive caloric intake sends out a signal to start burning less stored fuel. In other words, the metabolic rate (the rate at which the body burns fuel) is reduced as the body attempts to conserve fuel in reaction to a state of famine. Your body is hanging on for dear life to its beloved fat. Face Down The Dreaded Plateau: There are things we can do to face down the dreaded plateau. The first is to avoid beating up on ourselves or regretting the decision for WLS. Simply accept that a plateau is part of the natural course of weight loss and this too shall pass. Plateaus can last two to four weeks. Try to be patient and consider your body is simply taking a rest from the hard work of losing weight. Avoid snacking during the plateau. Old eating habits that caused obesity may resurface as we comfort our disappointment with extra snacks or make unhealthy food choices. Try to avoid this type of self-sabotage. Keep in mind, a plateau is a difficult time emotionally. I can recall feeling, I really didnt deserve to lose all this weight anyway, so I may as well eat this or that. Avoid the self-pity trap. Re-examine your commitment to healthy eating and exercise. Sometimes a plateau can be busted simply by returning the very basic principles of living after gastric bypass. One nurse-dietician suggests a return to pure protein for 48-hours. That means eating only eggs, low-fat cheese, chicken, tuna, turkey, etc. - nothing processed. The science behind that is the intake of pure amino acids (protein) will boost metabolism and force the body to burn stored fat. Another way to feel proactive in plateau busting is to kick-up the exercise program. Add an extra half-mile to a walk or an extra set of repetitions to the strength training program. Any little change will catch the body off guard and it just may respond by dropping a pound or two. And of course continue to drink clear fluids, specifically water, to flush the body of toxins and fat. Counterfeit Plateaus: Now, What about the plateau that lasts longer than four weeks and you still have lots of weight to lose? These are referred to as Counterfeit Plateaus in the health community. Most counterfeit plateaus result from miscalculations or forgetfulness on the part of the dieter. For example, maybe we are forgetting to avoid starchy carbs or processed snacks. Maybe we are eating a tiny dinner and an hour later eating another tiny dinner? Perhaps weve fallen out of the habit of exercise. Little slip-ups or forgetfulness can become quite costly if we let it go too long without correcting the behavior. Take a hard look and find ways to improve habits and boost weight loss. Water/Fluid Retention Plateaus: Too much salt in the diet will cause a water retention plateau avoid prepared soups or other foods that have excessive salt. A fluid retention plateau is the result of insufficient water consumption so the body retains fluid to compensate. Remember, drink the water. Plateaus are Temporary: Remember, plateaus are temporary. As discouraging as it may seem at the time it will pass and it is a natural part of the weight loss journey. Copyright 2005 Kaye Bailey - All Rights Reserved.
